Charleville Co. Cork is home to numerous businesses from professional services to your everyday shopping needs. This week we meet up with Martin Hennessy from Charleville who started U Drive School of Motoring a number of years ago.
Martin decided to set up his own driving school because he always wanted to work in this area in particular and always liked working with people. Martin spotted a gap in the market at the time when over 200,000 people were waiting to do their test at a time when a new law was introduced. This meant learners and those on provisional licences needed to have a fully licenced driver sitting beside them when driving. People felt under pressure to get their full licence which led to a big back log of people waiting to do their test.
Martin seized this opportunity, he felt he was in a great central location by being in Charleville as at that time he was able to cover five test centres. Martin was working on a part-time basis for a catering company when he first started up U Drive School of Motoring but when he built up such a great pass rate, he just couldn’t keep the two jobs going so he had to walk out of the catering company and concentrate fully on the driving school.

Did you make any changes your business over the years?
The only change that was made to the business over the years was supplying an extra service through adding Gift Vouchers to the product range. Martin found that a lot of his customer base were asking for Gift Vouchers for their family/friends. He felt it would be an ideal opportunity to satisfy his customers’ needs.
Is e-commerce is a big part of their business?
At the moment Martin does not rely on e-commerce to sell or advertise his driving school; however he does use Facebook marketing to add to his professional reputation by sharing all the latest updates from the RSA and giving his clients extra tips to help them pass their test first time.
He has recently signed up to MyMainStreet.ie to help create more awareness of the excellent service that he provides to all his clients.
